Kitchen extension finished! What now??

October 22 2014

So the builders have now left (phew!) and wow, what a space! Gosh, what to do with this space now? Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Think of the atmosphere you are trying to create in the room. What style of kitchen units and worktops have you chosen? Are they clean lined contemporary or have you gone for a more classic or cosy country look? This starting point will help set the tone for the rest of the room. As you have an open plan space, everything needs to flow.

2. Create a dining zone within the space with a table and chairs which are in keeping with your chosen style direction. Further define this zone with the help of a dresser type piece, allowing you to store or display crockery and giving you a surface for lamps or lanterns near the table. The one pictured is from Attic in Hampton Hill - you’ll find lanterns, candles and other yummy things there too. Bet you can’t leave without a little brown bag full of lovely treats!

3. Create a lounging zone with a corner or ‘L’ style sofa. In open plan spaces, the sofa is often not against the wall and so can look like it is rather floating in the room. Corner sofas help structure this type of open space and they are perfect for informal family living. We especially love the Leon Corner Sofa from as it is super comfy and comes in many sizes and configurations so as to best fit your space.

4. Introduce a rug. They are a great tool for creating zones and help add cosiness, texture and / or colour.John Lewis and Heals have great ranges.

5. Remember, you don’t have to spend a fortune and you don’t have to buy everything in one go. The most important thing is to have a vision of the room your are trying to create, then you can shop as and when your budget allows. We are here to help you if you need us. This is what we do!
